Description
DURANTE, Louis. History of Nice from its foundation to the year 1792, with an overview of the events that took place during the French Revolution up to and including 1815. Turin, Joseph Favale’s Printing House, 1823. 3 vols. in-8. Brown half-shagreen, ribbed spine with gilt title and author’s name. First edition of this important historical study of the city of Nice. Louis Durante, Baron of Nice (1781–1852), served as Secretary-General of the Government of the County of Nice to the Crown (1814–1822) and subsequently as Royal Inspector of Woods and Forests from 1824 onwards. He spent his life between his Baroque palace in Old Nice and the villages of the mountains of Nice and Piedmont, taking an interest in their medieval traditions. He left behind a large collection of historical books in French and Italian, including his magnum opus, a historical panorama that required more than ten years of research and writing, *La chorographie du comté de Nice, depuis sa fondation jusqu’à l’année 1792* (A Chorography of the County of Nice, from its foundation to the year 1792), dedicated to King Charles Albert of Savoy and published in 1847. A fine copy. Water stains.
