London, James Cawthorn, 1822. 20th-century amateur binding, red half-shagreen, title, author’s name and date gilt. First edition of this highly interesting account of a journey through France by the Englishman John Hughes, undertaken during the Restoration in 1819. The volume is illustrated with a frontispiece and 12 etched plates containing views and scenes—some of which are rather humorous—based on the author’s sketches.
