NICE IN THE SUN. [Late 19th century] 1 vol. oblong folio. Red half-shagreen, red cloth-covered boards, floral decoration and large gilt title on the front cover, gilt edges, leaves mounted on tabs. Half-title within a lithographed frame, beautiful title page lithographed in blue and gold (Imprimerie et lithographie Malvano Mignon, Nice), 11 lithographed introductory leaves. Set of 20 large-format albumen prints: approximately 19.5 x 31 cm, including panoramas.
Author’s name in the bottom left-hand corner, address “6 rue Paradis – Nice” in the bottom right-hand corner. Title at the bottom centre. Photographs mounted on heavy paper, within a wide yellow frame. Beautiful contrasts and the photographs are in excellent condition. The photographer’s address allows these photographs to be dated to around 1866–1875 and then to around 1888–1890. Eugène Degand (1839–1911) was part of the second generation of French photographers (1860s–1880s). He settled in Nice in 1863 and is listed in the Nice directories as a painter from 1864 onwards, but as a photographer only from 1869. He belonged to the first generation of photographers in Nice, which included portrait and landscape photographers such as Pierre Ferret (1815–1875), Michele Schemboche (c. 1828–1908), Alberto Pacelli (1821–after 1884), Luigi Crette (1823–1872), Miguel Aleo (Havana, 1824 – after 1885?), Joseph Silli (c. 1838–after 1905), Charles Nègre (Grasse, 1820 – Grasse 1880), Jean Walburg de Bray (Orléans, 1839–Nice, 1901). Scuffs on the front cover. Corners worn.
