Description
PIEDMONT SCHOOL, CIRCA 1520, A FOLLOWER OF LEONARDO DA VINCI The Virgin and Child with the young Saint John the Baptist and a lamb Poplar panel, single plank Height: 52 cm – Width: 42.5 cm Bears inscriptions on the reverse Unframed Previous restorations and losses We suggest that this panel belongs to the circle of Piedmontese artists influenced by Leonardo da Vinci, centred on Bernardino Lanino (1512–1583) and his pupils Boniforte Oldoni (1490–1555) and Girolamo Giovenone (1520?–1584/1586), all three of whom were active in Vercelli whilst maintaining links with the work of Milanese artists influenced by Leonardo. We would like to thank Professors Mauro Natale and Vittorio Natale for their assistance in describing this lot. Both suggest attributing our painting to Boniforte Oldoni, based on a digital photograph (in emails dated 11 and 14 June 2026 respectively). A (preparatory?) drawing of our composition was sold at auction in Berlin in 1931 (49 x 39 cm), attributed by Karl E. Maison to Gaudenzio Ferrari (RKD, Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie – image, permalink no. 1494804). The design of our composition is clearly a blend of motifs developed by Leonardo, who exerted a dominant influence in northern Italy in the mid-sixteenth century. The chubby, sleeping Jesus, the smiles on the faces, the sleeve of the robe, the dynamic sequence of figures, the subtle ‘sfumato’ and even the view opening out onto a mountainous landscape are all borrowed from the paintings or drawings of the famous Tuscan genius (regarding the influence of *Saint Anne* on Lanino and Piedmont, see the exhibition catalogue, *Saint Anne, Leonardo da Vinci’s Final Masterpiece*, Paris, Musée du Louvre, 29 March to 25 June 2012, pp. 105–114).
