SAKTI BURMAN (1935–) Dove Oil on canvas, signed lower left, countersigned and titled on the reverse, minor loss of paint at the edges 24 x 19 cm Sakti Burman, born in 1935 in Calcutta, is an Indian painter and sculptor. In the early 1950s, he came to Paris to continue his artistic education at the École des Beaux-Arts. He subsequently returned to India, wishing to bring a Western perspective to Indian culture, but in the 1960s he settled in Paris permanently. His work is characterised by a poetic surrealism rich in symbols drawn from Indian mythology and tradition, yet fused with Western aesthetics. In his painting, he experiments with a unique technique of pictorial marbling reminiscent of Italian frescoes.
