History: In 1878, Jean Daum bought the Avril, Bertrand et Cie glassworks, which had been established in Nancy in 1874. For around ten years, production was limited to watch glasses, bottles and drinking glasses. The company gradually took a new direction following Jean Daum’s death in 1885. A partnership then developed between his two sons, Auguste and Antonin, with the former handling the administrative side and the latter responsible for establishing an artistic production programme. It is generally accepted that this artistic production truly began in 1891, the very year this model was created. The complex decorative arrangement of this carafe features alternating bands running diagonally across it, bearing the Cross of Lorraine and cloud motifs in a Japanese style. This design, enhanced by the use of gilding, is etched. The Cross of Lorraine motif, borrowed from the region’s coat of arms, is part of the Lotharingian cultural movement that developed in the aftermath of the 1870 war. The Carafe with Lorraine Crosses is entirely characteristic of this style from the years 1890–1893.
