Description
Iatmul people, Sepik River, Papua New Guinea. Pommel of a ritual dagger known as the ‘Payback dagger’, consisting of a terracotta head topped with cassowary feathers and decorated with shells, mollusc valves and organic materials. The blade, which is missing here but the remains of which can be seen at the base of the neck, was made from human or cassowary bone (femur). (crack on the right ear, damage to the nose) Total height including feathers: 40 cm; height of the mask alone: 16 cm; width: 17 cm.
