Description
Decorative lamp, Tahiti, French Polynesia.
Lamp made from Oceanic rosewood. The lampshade is formed by two pieces of pearl oyster shell, one undecorated and the other decorated: a young woman, crowned with flowers, dances surrounded by two young drummers. All are clad in loincloths made from plant fibres. The figures are on the beach, framed by coconut palms. The background depicts Mount Orohena, the highest mountain in Tahiti.
A modern piece of craftsmanship, the mother-of-pearl work on this lamp continues the tradition of this ancestral Polynesian craft.
1950s
Dimensions: 26 x 22 x 13 cm
