Description
A pair of silver-plated bronze candlesticks based on a design by Juste-Aurèle MEISSONNIER.
The base features ornamentation in the form of acanthus leaves, shells, clasps and flutes. The shaft is decorated with scrollwork and three cartouches adorned with attributes. The finial is supported by small putti.

Model based on the candlesticks created by Juste-Aurèle MEISSONNIER for Louis XV and now in the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum (inv. 332A/B).
The design for these candlesticks is said to have been drawn by Meissonnier to mark the birth of the Dauphin in 1729.
Probably French in origin, dating from the second half of the 19th century.
Juste-Aurèle MEISSONNIER (1695–1750) was one of the leading figures in the emergence of the Rocaille style in France. The son of a goldsmith from Aix-en-Provence who had settled in Turin, he moved to Paris around 1715 and pursued a career characterised by remarkable artistic versatility. A medallist, chaser, goldsmith, sculptor, draughtsman, decorator and architect, he was appointed in 1726 as draughtsman to the King’s Chamber and Cabinet, a post which brought him official recognition.
Above all an innovator of form, Meissonnier developed an innovative ornamental vocabulary, based on asymmetry, movement and fantasy, which made a decisive contribution to the emergence of the Rocaille style in Paris in the 1730s. His designs were widely disseminated through engravings, notably in the *Œuvre de Meissonnier*, and exerted a lasting influence on the decorative arts, although their physical execution was most often entrusted to other craftsmen working under his supervision.
