Description
AUGUST 1st century BC Bust with diadem on the right, hair up in a bun on the nape of the neck. Grenetis. R/. Bull charging left. Above, GERMANVS and below, INDVTILLI L(ibertvs). Grènetis. ♦ DT 707; LT 9248; Scheers (Lyon) 1157; Scheers 739 et seq. Bronze semis "with bull" in the name of the magistrate *Indutillus. (2.80 g) Slightly off-centre on reverse. Olive green patina. Very fine/T.B. *This bronze, sometimes in the classical style, made from an alloy containing an average of 12% zinc (orichalcum), is a semis and not a quadrans as has long been supposed. It is cut to the nearest 1/108th of a pound (9 dozen). The distribution map shows that its circulation followed fairly closely the boundaries of the new province of Gallia Belgica, for which it served as a supplementary coinage. Traditionally classed as Gallic coinage, this bronze is in fact a provincial issue made in Rheims under imperial control by a Rhaetian prince named Indutillus". Jean-Marc Doyen, a researcher at the University of Lille III, reattributes this bronze to the Rèmes. JRC Collection
