Duchess of Angoulême. Marie-Thérèse Charlotte de France, known as "Madame Royale", was the first child of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette, born in 1799 after more than eight years of marriage. Her birth was eagerly awaited and hailed by the French people, and Te Deums were sung in every church in the kingdom. Marie-Thérèse was baptised on 19 December 1778, the day of her birth, in the chapel of the Château de Versailles by Louis de Rohan, Cardinal-Bishop of Strasbourg and Grand Chaplain of France. She died in 1824.
