Competition of 1848. Thirty-two engravers competed for the creation of the new coinage of the
Republic, including Barre, Oudiné and Merley. From 1849 onwards, the types adopted were the head of the Republic crowned with ears of corn by Merley for gold and the type created by Oudiné for silver.
