Giovanni II Bentivoglio or John II Bentivoglio, (12 February 1443 - 15 February 1508), condottiere and heir to the Bentivoglio family, he became prince of Bologna, which he governed for more than 40 years (1462-1506). On the death of his uncle Sante, to keep up appearances in defence of republican freedoms, he accepted the post of gonfalonier of justice. Pope Paul II appointed him head of the Senate for life, with the right to two votes in elections, as well as pontifical vicar of the city and its contado. He was lord of the city when he was just twenty years old.
