Bronze medal "au coffret" dated 1460 (244.35 g; Ø 92 mm).

Engraver: Petrecini, Florentine medallist who worked in Ferrara. This Petrecino may have been Pietro di Neri Razzanti.
Later cast. Retouched blanks. Beautiful shaded brown patina. A very fine piece.
Borso, marquis of Este and first duke of Ferrara and Modena, natural son of Nicolas d'Este. He succeeded his elder brother Lionel. The arts, sciences and literature flourished under the prince's protection. He also encouraged commerce and industry. He died in Ferrara on 20 August 1471.
