T.B.
Since the Middle Ages, the wedding ceremony was accompanied by the presentation of a small case containing thirteen coins (deniers or bracteates) which made up the "treizain". This is a set of thirteen denarii, the religious symbol of the Last Supper: Jesus Christ and the 12 apostles. The thirteen denarii blessed by the priest symbolised the entry of the bride and groom into a community of goods. The priest deducted one denarius for the church, and gave the remaining twelve denarii to the bride... The thirteen pence became a dozen! From the 16th century onwards, spouses used two types of monetary object for the treizain. The common practice was to re-use existing coins, sometimes gilded or silvered.
