The collection assembled by Henri Meyer, acquired and then donated to the Bibliothèque nationale by Carlos de Besteigui, consisted in 1902 of 717 coins and 428 medals, tokens and medallions. This collection is highly representative of Alsatian numismatics in the Middle Ages and modern times: landgraviate of Upper Alsace under Habsburg rule with the Ensisheim workshop, bishopric and town of Strasbourg, towns of Colmar, Haguenau, Mulhouse, Thann, Molsheim, town and abbey of Wissembourg, abbey of Murbach and Lure, counties of Sarrewerden, Weinbourg and Hanau-Lichtenberg, numerous medieval anepigraphic denarii and bracteates.
Henri Meyer. Abraham Henri Meyer was born in Illzach near Mulhouse on 8 February 1830 into a family of Alsatian manufacturers of printed and Indian fabrics in the Mulhouse region who had been active since the 18th century and were allied to the great names in the industry (Dollfuss, Engel, Hartmann, Koechlin, Thierry and Schlumberger, among others). After the war of 1870-1871, he decided to set up a textile factory in Ourscamp in the Oise region. After his death, his heirs had the collection dispersed.
