Description
SOBIN George
Silvers crowns of France.
A study of silver shields from Louis XIII to the Revolution and 5 franc coins from the Revolution to 1973.
260 pages. Hardback. Faded dust jacket.
Good condition.
This work is the only study of its kind carried out on shields from 1610 to 1793 and on silver 5 Francs up to 1973. It is of great interest to collectors of this period. Each type is photographed and the author also gives rarity indices for these coins. George Sobin was an American numismatist who collected French coins, but seeing how little recent numismatic literature was available, he decided to make a study of all the ecus and 5 franc coins from 1641 to 1973. The sale of the part corresponding to the royal shields took place on 7 and 8 March 1977 in Chicago by Joseph Lepczyk and was the largest sale of shields ever carried out, with 1,336 coins.
