Description
Ptolemaic Kingdom (305–30 BC), Egypt, attributed to Alexandria Berenice II (246–222 BC). Octodrachm or Mnaeion, probably struck posthumously around 211–210 BC. Gold. Obverse: Bust of Berenice II, wearing a diadem and veiled, facing right. No inscription Reverse: APΣINOHΣ ΦΙΛΑΔΕΛΦOY, double cornucopia, bunches of grapes hanging down at the sides, bound by a net. Weight: 27.80 g. SUP to FDC. Description: Also known as Arsinoe, Berenice II was the wife of Ptolemy III Euergetes, ‘the Generous’ (246–222 BC), and Queen of Egypt between 246 and 222 BC. As a figure of authority, she was depicted on coins posthumously during the reigns of Ptolemy III and Ptolemy IV. Our coin features a rare variant of this design, with neither a border nor a symbol on the left-hand side of the obverse, whilst depicting the crowned queen and the double cornucopia.
