Description
French Empire, Paris Commemorative medal marking Queen Hortense of Holland’s visit to the Paris Mint, 1813 (1808).  Gold. Obverse: Portrait of the Queen facing right; Greek inscription: ΟΡΤΗΣΙΑ ΒΑΣΙΛΙΣΣΑ (Queen Hortense). Signed: ligated monogram AN (Bernard Andrieu).  Reverse: A canvas with a sketch of a female portrait, resting on an easel from which hangs a wreath of roses; around the easel are arranged the attributes of Music and Painting; at its base lies a book on which is written ROMANCES. Exergue: ΤΙΜΩΣΙ ΤΙΜΩΜΕΝΑΙ ΕΆΩΙΤ (Honoured, they honour / year 1813) Signed: BP. / AN (for André Brenet / Bertrand Andrieu) Weight: 7.5 g. FDC in SPL. Braumen 767 – Gorjeu 188 (bronze version) Description: A medal struck to mark a visit that never took place; it forms part of a series of six medals, each 22 mm in diameter, struck in honour of Pauline, Caroline and Elisa.  It should be noted that Braumen dates the strike to December 1808. Our medal is the rare gold version of a medal struck in copper, bronze and silver, a copy of which is held in the Louvre’s collections under the reference number OAP 3280.
