Sicily, Gela. Litra or obol ND (465–450 BC), Gela.
Obverse: A horse advancing to the right, surmounted by a wreath above its hindquarters.
Reverse: ΓΕ-ΛΑ-Σ (anti-clockwise, from 3 o’clock to 9 o’clock). The river god Gela depicted as a protome of a bull with a human head, facing right.
HGC 2, 373 – Jenkins 336; Silver – 0.81 g – 11 mm – 1 h
Quite a fine strike, on a slightly notched flan. The fields are barely corroded. Dark patina. TTB / TTB to Superb.
