Sicily, Syracuse, Timoleon, Third Democracy (344–317 BC). Hemidrachm ND (343–317 BC), Syracuse.
Obverse: [ΣYΡΑΚΟΣ]ΙΩΝ. Bust of Athena wearing a crested helmet and a pearl necklace, in three-quarter profile facing left.
Reverse: A young naked horseman on a horse walking to the right; behind him, the sun.
HGC 2, 1370 – SNG ANS 520–521; Silver – 1.26 g – 13 mm – 1 h
Acquired from the Banque Populaire du Nord in 1983.
The strike is only slightly off-centre. A beautifully styled bust on the obverse. No variant on the reverse. The patina is old, with bluish highlights. Superb.
