ANCIENT GREECE - GREEK
Macedonia, Neapolis. Drachma ND (525–450 BC), Neapolis (Kavala).
Obverse: Gorgoneion facing forwards, with protruding tongue.
Reverse: Four-part square with recessed centre.

Acquired from Bourgey in 1985.
On a slightly oblong flan, with the obverse in high relief. Slight wear on the high reliefs and a light grey patina. Almost Superb.
Neapolis, modern-day Kavala, was founded by Thasos, who coveted the nearby gold and silver mines. Once the city gained independence, it exploited its own resources, producing a significant coinage of staters and fractions, which began around 525 BC. The eponymous design featured a gorgoneion paired with a hollow square. From 424 onwards, the reverse bore the head of the local goddess Artemis Parthenos.
