Description
ANCIENT GREECE - GREEK Macedonia (Kingdom of), Perseus (176–168 BC). ‘Pseudo-Rhodian’ drachma of the magistrate Ermias ND (175–170 BC), Thessaly. Obverse: Head of Helios facing forwards, with flowing hair. Reverse: ΕΡΜΙΑΣ. Rose with bud on the right between Z and Ω. SNG Keckman 793–795 – SNG Cop.S358 – Klein 560; Silver – 2.68 g – 16.5 mm – 12 h On an oblong flan, with a slight golden patina. Superb in proof condition. The Macedonian king Perseus probably struck this series to reward the Cretan mercenaries serving in his army (Liv. XLII, 51, 7). The mint master may have been Hermias, son of Zoilos, of Oropos, who died in 178 BC at Delphi whilst serving as hieromnemon [cf. Ashton, NC 1948 (1988) pp. 29–30 or Price, Larissa Hoard (1989) pp. 241–242]
