Locris, Oponte. Triobol or hemidrachma ND (340–330 BC), Oponte.
Obverse. Head of Demeter facing right, wearing a wreath of ears of corn, with earrings and a pearl necklace.
Rev. [ΟΠΟΝ]ΤΙΩΝ. Ajax the Lesser, advancing to the right in a fighting stance, naked except for his helmet, holding a shield and a sword; the inside of the shield is decorated with a coiled snake; a kantharos between his legs.

Acquired from Danicourt in 1991.
Slightly off-centre strike on the reverse. Even wear on the obverse. With a grey patina with bluish highlights. Very Good to Superb.
Oponte was the capital of Opontian Locris. It was said to have been founded by Opous. It was the homeland of Patroclus and Ajax. The Opontians fought alongside Leonidas at Thermopylae.
