Caria, Rhodes. Plintophoros drachma bearing the name of the magistrate Antaios ND (125–88 BC), Rhodes.
Obverse: Radiate head of Helios facing right.
Rev. ΑΝΤΑΙΟΣ / P - O. Rosebud, with the rising sun on the right, all within a hollow square.

On a wide, flattened flan, the strike is off-centre on the obverse. Retains its lustre. Superb in proof condition.
The Rhodian plinthophore coins, dating from the early 1st century BC, were issued on a massive scale to meet the enormous expenditure incurred by the Rhodians in the face of the Pontic threat. The date of the siege of the island by Mithridates allows us to establish that this production must date from around 90 BC. The Rhodian plinthophore hemidrachms have the same value as Roman sesterces, which were at that time being re-struck in silver. During this period of financial hardship in Rhodes, it appears that certain inhabitants of the island (non-citizens, whether or not organised into associations) also contributed to the supply of minted silver, as suggested by epigraphic and numismatic evidence [Éva Apostólou – RN, 2016, pp. 123–138]
