Paphlagonia, Sinope. Drachma bearing the name of the magistrate Agr[eos] ND (330–300 BC), Sinope.
Obverse: Head of the nymph Sinope facing left, her hair gathered in a sakkos.
Reverse: ΣINΩ / ΑΓP[EΩΣ]. A pygargus or fish-eating eagle, with outstretched wings, carrying a dolphin to the left.

High relief and of remarkable quality, with all the details of the nymph, the eagle and the dolphin. Attractive grey patina. Superb in mint condition.
Sinope, a colony of Miletus, was founded in the 7th century BC. Situated on the northern coast of the Pontus Euxinus, this maritime city was one of the region’s most important ports. The introduction of this new type, featuring the head of the nymph Sinope, coincided with the establishment of a democratic regime in Sinope in 453 BC by the Athenians.
