ANCIENT GREECE - GREEK
Lydia, Alyattes I [or Walwet] (635–585 BC). 1/3 stater or trite ND (610–560 BC), Sardis.
Obverse: Lion’s head, mouth open, facing right, with a radiant sun on the forehead.
Reverse: Rectangular die mark inscribed with two irregular squares.

On an electrum ingot, with a centred strike. Slight patina. TTB to Superb.
Alyattes I was the fourth king of the Mermnad dynasty, who reigned over Lydia from 685 to 547 BC, and the father of Croesus. He was the first to issue coins in electrum, whilst his son would establish a bimetallic gold and silver system. His name, Alyattes – or Walwetes in Lydian – derives from the Lydian word ‘walwe’, meaning ‘lion’, which is depicted on the obverse of this electrum trite.
