Lydia, Alyattes I [or Walwet] (635–585 BC). 1/12th of a stater or trite ND (610–560 BC), Sardis.
Obverse: Lion’s head, mouth open, facing right.
Reverse: Irregular hollow square.

Alyattes I was the fourth king of the Mermnad dynasty, who reigned over Lydia from 685 to 547 BC, and the father of Croesus. He was the first to issue coins in electrum, whilst his son would establish a bimetallic gold/silver system. His name, Alyattes – or Walwetes in Lydian – derives from the Lydian word walwe, meaning ‘lion’, which is depicted on the obverse of this electrum trite.
