ANCIENT GREECE - GREEK Cilicia, city unknown. Obol featuring a sphinx, reverse (c. 350 BC), workshop unknown. Obverse: Head facing forwards (Gorgoneion?), with earrings beneath the side locks of hair. Reverse: Sphinx wearing a kalathos, seated facing left, within a hollow square. SNG Levante 250 – SNG Paris 479 – Babelon, Treatise, 1519 (Nagidos) – Nomos AG 29, “Unparalleled Collection”, no. 893; Silver – 0.69 g - 10.5 mm - 3 h From the Elsen 96 sale, 14 June 2008, lot 151. Off-centre strike on the obverse, but of fine style. The patina is old, with golden highlights. Superb.
