ANCIENT GREECE - GREEK
Phoenicia, Sidon, Ba’alshillem II (401–366 BC). 1/16 of a shekel (Phoenician standard) ND, Byblos.
Obverse: A Phoenician pentakontérion on the left, riding the waves; above, [B in Phoenician] and (year).
Reverse: O in the centre. The Persian king on the right, raising a crown over a lion on the left, facing him.
HGC 10, 240 – Betlyon 27; Silver – 0.78 g – 9 mm – 12 h
Acquired at the Leuven numismatic fair in 1993.
The letters denoting the year on the obverse are difficult to interpret, as the strike is somewhat faint. The reverse is in excellent condition. Beautiful, lustrous collector’s patina with bluish highlights. TTB / Superb.
