GAUL - CELTIC Massilia – Marseille. Obol bearing the head of Apollo with a crobylos, ND (490–470 BC), Marseille. Obverse: Head of Apollo with crobylos facing right. Reverse: Hollow square. Dicomon OBA-C – Furtwängler C – LT.8; Silver – 1.14 g – 9 mm – 12 h Acquired from Jean Vinchon Numismatique in 1988. Type from the Auriol hoard, discovered in 1867. High relief, with a dark patina. Mintage flaw on the eye. Almost Superb. The term ‘crobylos’, from the Ancient Greek κρωβύλος (krôbulos), means ‘with a tuft’, a bun or a roll of hair (cf. the Apollo Crobylos in the Louvre – MND 1813)
