GAUL - CELTIC Massilia – Marseille. Obol bearing a griffin’s head and a lion facing right (480–460 BC), Marseille. Obverse: Griffin’s head facing right. Reverse: Lion’s head facing right, mouth open, within a hollow square. Dicomon OBA-FF – Furtwängler group FF – LT.500; Silver – 0.82 g – 9 mm – 3 h Acquired from J.-L. Cougnard in 2015. Type from the Auriol hoard, discovered in 1867. Features the griffin’s head in high relief on the obverse, with detailed ear, eye and tongue. The lion is centred on the reverse, with the square fully intact. Antique grey patina. Superb / Very Fine.
