GAUL - CELTIC Massilia – Marseille. Obole with head facing left, known as the ‘head of Pompey’ ND (215–49 BC), Marseille. Obverse: Romanised youthful head facing left. Reverse: Four-spoked wheel, with Μ and Α in two of the quadrants. MHM.15B – Dicomon cf. OBM-9d – D’Hermy series 8; Silver – 0.63 g – 10 mm – 3 h Acquired from [Alain] Weil in 2012. On an oblong blank, with a highly detailed head on the obverse. Well centred on the reverse. Slight patina with golden highlights on the original lustre. Superb. Henry d’Hermy identifies the portrait on the obverse as that of Scipio Africanus, comparing it to a ring held at the Archaeological Museum of Naples. During the Second Punic War (221–201 BC), Marseille was an ally of Rome
