Description
GAUL - CELTIC Cisalpine Gaul, Liguria. Obol, an imitation of the Marseille drachma, with ‘ND’ on the obverse (2nd century BC). Obverse: Head of Diana facing right, with curly hair, wearing a pearl necklace. Reverse: Horned animal with curly fleece, facing left (goat?); above, a four-petalled flower centred on a bezant; below, a three-petalled flower centred on a besant. Pautasso 483, pl. 97 (Serra Riccò) – Aosta Museum 31–35; Silver – 0.63 g – 13 mm – 12 h Acquired from J.-L. Cougnard in 2000. On a wide blank for an obol, of this weight. The obverse appears to imitate the drachma of Marseille. With a grey patina and a concave blank. Superb.
