Description
GAUL - CELTIC Cavaillon. Obole depicting a cornucopia, undated (44–42 BC), Cavaillon. Obverse: CABE. Head to the right with braids. Reverse: Within a wreath formed of two branches, a cornucopia flanked by LE – PI. LT.2545 – RPC.528; Silver – 0.37 g – 9 mm – 2 h Acquired from Albuquerque in 1989. The strike is off-centre on the obverse. With a dark patina. Very Good to Superb. These obols were struck during the governorship of Lepidus in 44–42 BC, when he governed Hispania Citerior and Gallia Narbonensis following Caesar’s death. Lepidus eventually rallied to Antony, becoming one of his lieutenants. He was confirmed in his post in Gallia Narbonensis at the time of the Second Triumvirate. Several portraits are identifiable – at least three – including one with neatly arranged hair and three neat plaits, another intermediate portrait with a bust still of fine style, and finally a third, coarser portrait with shaggy hair.
