Description
GAUL - CELTIC Veneti or Riedoni. Silver stater depicting a lyre with the inscription ‘ND’ (1st century BC). Obverse: Profile to the right, with hair arranged in three curls, extended downwards by long S-shaped strands with coiled, pointed curls; the nose is long and slender; two scrolls extend from the mouth. Reverse: An androcephalic horse facing right, driven by its charioteer holding the reins and a shaft terminating in a beaded disc; beneath the horse, a vertical lyre between two volutes. DT.- (series 359) - LT.-; Silver – 6.97 g – 20.5 mm – 7 h A poorly catalogued type, attributed to the Riedones (or Veneti), generally featuring a wheel on the reverse (MDC 18 no. 124). Our specimen features a lyre between two volutes, like specimen CGB bga_825424 (unpublished, €4,000). Slight wear on the reliefs. Very Good to Superb condition.
