Description
GAUL - CELTIC
Veneti or Riedoni. Billon stater, a hybrid type known as the ‘Piolaine’ type, class V, bearing the ND wheel (c. 56 BC).
Obverse: Profile to the right, with hair arranged in three coils, extended downwards by long S-shaped locks with curled ends. A scroll emerging from the mouth and beaded cords emerging from the forehead; the cheek adorned with three bezants.
Reverse: An androcephalic horse facing left, with a linear mane ending in a large head (remnant of the charioteer). S-shaped reins extend from the mouth. Beneath the belly, a large beaded wheel with eight spokes.
DT.2301 - MAN 7066; Billon - 5.68 g - 21 mm - 3 h
On a broad, oblong flan, barely cracked beneath the strike. Both the obverse and reverse are complete and remarkably well centred. A grey patina covers both sides. Rare. Almost Superb.
A type known as ‘Piolaine’ (Ille-et-Vilaine), featuring a Venetic type on the obverse and the Riedons type on the reverse. Only a few examples are known, and they are thought to be linked to Caesar’s military campaign of 56 BC in western Gaul. They may have formed part of the treasury reserves of the Gallic armies, which were retreating in the face of the Roman advance.
