Description
GAUL - CELTIC Osis. Quarter-stater billon coin with a barrier, head to the left, ND (c. 80–50 BC). Obverse: Head to the left, hair in three thick locks; beaded cords wound around it. Reverse: Androcephalic horse facing left; above, a small human head looking upwards; a hippodrome barrier between the horse’s legs and a four-spoked disc in front of the chest, attached by a thread. DT.2221 v. (base gold) – LT.–; billon – 1.66 g – 15.5 mm – 12 h Acquired from St. Dhaussy, previously in the collection of [Alain] Weil. Spectrometer analysis shows 77 per cent copper, 16 per cent silver and 6 per cent gold. The off-centre strike on the obverse reveals the entire front of the design. The reverse is very complete, on a fairly wide flan, with the tent, the wheel and the androcephalus all clearly visible. Beautiful dark patina. TTB to Superb.
