GAUL - CELTIC
Carnutes. Quarter of a biface stater, ‘with beaded decoration’, ND (2nd–1st centuries BC).
Obverse: Apollonian profile to the right, without a laurel wreath, with curly hair; the base of the neck is very curved.
Reverse: Chariot with two horses facing right, driven by a stylised charioteer with an oversized left hand; the horses’ hooves are rounded and form a geometric pattern.

Acquired from S. Prat in 2006. This is the specimen illustrated in the Supplement to the New Atlas, no. 2543B.
This 491 series is characterised by the horses’ ball-shaped legs on the reverse. With a matt gold patina. Extremely rare, if not unique. Very good condition.
