Description
GAUL - CELTIC Bituriges / Uncertain tribes of the Central-West. Drachma featuring a wolf and a triskelion, Class II with a left-facing profile of ND (mid-2nd century BC). Obverse: Beardless head facing left, hair in thick locks in the Aquitanian style, with a pearl necklace adorning the neck at an angle. Reverse: Horse facing right, with a wolf seated on its hindquarters and a counter-clockwise swastika between the horse’s legs. DT.3362 – LT. missing, cf. 6017 – Nash 1978, no. 124; Silver – 3.22 g – 15.5 mm – 5 h From the Werochowski collection in 2018, and previously purchased from Bourgey in May 2000. Of exceptional quality and undoubtedly one of the finest known examples. Centred strike, in high relief, on a slightly concave flan. Attractive grey patina. Superb, in mint condition. All these drachmas (featuring superimposed horses and a wolf seated on a horse) are well represented in the Issoudun-et-Charnizay hoard. For this ‘wolf’ series, there are variants depending on the orientation of the head and whether it is adorned with a ball-and-cross motif. Whilst all the reverse sides face right, the swastika beneath the horse is sometimes clockwise and sometimes anti-clockwise (as on our drachma).
