Description
GAUL - CELTIC Bituriges / Uncertain from the Central-West. Drachma, an imitation of the so-called ‘Cheverny’ series, with the pseudo-inscriptions ND (1st century BC). Obverse: Pseudo-inscription in a wavy pattern. Head facing left, with a headband in the hair held by a knot at the nape of the neck, wearing a pearl necklace, all set within a reticulated border. Reverse: Pseudo-legend in waves. Galloping horse to the left, beneath a sun; a four-rayed ball-and-spoke disc below, between two small rings. DT.- (cf. 573, Meldes or 2363, Bituriges) - LT.- - BnF 4787; Silver – 1.73 g – 16.5 mm – 2 h Type not listed in the catalogue but present at the BnF (no. 4787), provisionally attributable to the so-called Cheverny series. Could it be attributed to the Meldes? Or the Cubic Bituriges? It has a wide flan, with the motifs centred. Extremely rare, with perhaps only four known examples (BnF, two in a private collection and our specimen). Very fine.
