Description
GAUL - CELTIC Bituriges Cubes. Drachma, wolf-and-horse type, Class II with profile to the left, Variant 2 with the cheek inscribed ‘ND’ (late 2nd – early 1st century BC). Obverse. Head facing left; the hair consists of a row of Aquitanian locks framing the face, with the remainder gathered into a sort of bun at the back; a pearl necklace at cheek level; and the cheek adorned with a four-lobed cross. Reverse: Horse facing right, a wolf sitting on the croup and a trilobed scroll beneath the horse. DT.3364 - Danicourt 142; Silver - 2.88 g - 14 mm - 12 h Acquired from St. Wero [Stéphane Werochowski] in 2007. Very well centred and struck, with a complete design and fine relief. Attractive grey patina. Superb. This series is interesting, offering multiple possible combinations of obverse and reverse designs. The head faces either to the right (Class I) or to the left (Class II), and each variant exists with or without the cross on the cheek. The reverse designs are more consistent, all facing right, but it is possible to distinguish a variant based on the direction of the triskelion: dextrogyrous (turning clockwise) or sinistrogyrous (turning anticlockwise).
