Description
GAUL - CELTIC Bituriges / Lemovices. Drachma, Class II, with three rings beneath the horse on the reverse (2nd–1st centuries BC). Obverse. Head facing left, with so-called ‘Aquitanian’ hair divided into thick locks; the ear depicted as a beaded torque. Reverse: Horse galloping to the left; an ‘Aquitanian’ head above the croup and three beaded rings between the legs. DT.3418 - LT.4572; Silver – 1.09 g – 11.5 mm – 3 h Acquired in 2003 from SW [Stéphane Werochowski]. Features a short die and reduced weight. The strike is correctly centred on the obverse and, whilst only the central upper ring is visible on the reverse, the small head above the horse is well detailed. With a grey patina. Very Good / Very Good to Superb. This series appears to be very well represented south of the Loire, with a primary distribution area in the south-west of the Bituriges region and particularly amongst the Lemovices.
