Description
GAUL - CELTIC
Lemovices. Drachma with a separate head, Class I, with a centred circle beneath the horse facing right (late 2nd – first third of the 1st century BC).
Obverse: Head facing left, with so-called ‘Aquitanian’ hair divided into three thick locks, wearing a beaded necklace.
Reverse: Horse in parade gait facing right; a severed head above the croup and a beaded ring with a stud between the legs.

Acquired from Poinsignon in 2000.
With a fine strike and good centring, this specimen is well detailed and covered in a delicate grey patina. Superb / Superb, nearly proof.
Whilst these drachmas are similar to the Bituriges coinage, with a very close resemblance on the obverse, the reverse featuring a cut head appears to be characteristic of issues attributed to the Lemovices. Within this series, there are numerous variations depending on the orientation of the obverse and reverse, as well as the motif between the horse’s legs (a dotted ring, a beaded and dotted ring, or three rings arranged in a triangle).
