Description
GAUL - CELTIC Lemovices. Drachma, Class I, with the circle centred beneath the horse; head facing right, ND (late 2nd – first third of the 1st century BC). Obverse: Head facing right, with the so-called ‘Aquitanian’ hairstyle divided into three thick locks. Reverse: Horse in parade gait facing left; a severed head above the croup and a beaded, pointed ring between the legs; a large ‘S’ to the rear. DT.S 3416A – LT.-; Silver – 2.18 g – 13 mm – 12 h Acquired in 2000. This variety with the head to the right was not included in the *Nouvel Atlas*, Volume III, but is illustrated by a specimen in the Supplement, Plate XII. On a short, irregular flan. A fine portrait on the obverse, facing right, and the reverse showing the cut-off head, slightly off-centre. Fine patina. Very Good to Superb. Whilst these drachmas are similar to the Bituriges coinage, with a very close resemblance on the obverse, the reverse with the cropped head appears to be characteristic of the issues attributed to the Lemovices. Within this series, there are numerous variations depending on the orientation of the obverse and reverse, as well as the motif between the horse’s legs (a dotted ring, a beaded and dotted ring, or three rings arranged in a triangle).
