Description
GAUL - CELTIC Élusates / Sotiates. Drachma featuring a horse, ND (2nd–1st centuries BC). Obverse: Highly stylised head facing left, composed of globules, large commas and two series of five parallel segments. Obverse: Horse facing left, with a sort of beaded square between its legs and a stylised wing above its back. Savès 512–513 – LT.3587; Silver – 2.78 g – 16 mm – 12 h Acquired from the BPN [Banque Populaire du Nord] in 1985. On a slightly scyphate flan, with a well-centred strike. Beautiful grey patina. Superb. According to G. Savès, these coins, originating mainly from the Gers, were found in the hoards at Manciet in 1846, Castelnau-sur-l’Auvignon in 1881 and Laujuzan in 1882. In the latter hoard, A. Blanchet reports a weight of between 2.30 and 3.45 g. The latest research seems to suggest instead that they should be attributed to the Sotiates (around Sos, Lot-et-Garonne), a people mentioned by Caesar (The Gallic Wars, III, 20–21)
