GAUL - CELTIC Volques Tectosages. Drachma, early ‘dolphins’ series, class with curled, ball-tipped locks, ND (230–160 BC). Obverse. Head in profile to the left, eye facing forwards, with hair consisting of wavy locks and comma-shaped locks with rounded ends, wearing a beaded necklace; two dolphins emerging from the mouth. Reverse: Cross without a ball at the end; a globule in the 1st, 2nd and 4th fields; a ball-headed axe in the 3rd field. Savès 269 – Hiriart 3.22; Silver – 3.59 g – 14.5 mm – 12 h Acquired from Cellard [Argenor sale] on 23 April 1999, lot no. 240. Well centred with fine relief. The reverse is slightly off-centre. The fields have been cleaned to a uniform shine. Very Fine to Superb.
