GAUL - CELTIC Rhône Valley / Allobroges. Denier BRI / COMA featuring a horseman, a caduceus and a wheel, ND (first third of the 1st century BC). Obverse: BR – I. Helmeted head of Rome facing right, with a caduceus or fern frond in front of the neck and mouth. Reverse: COMA. Horseman facing right, holding a spear in his right hand; a pointed ring beneath the horse. DT.3134-3135 v. – LT.5836 v.; Silver – 2.19 g – 15 mm – 9 h Variant with a pointed ring beneath the horse (or a wheel?). Of a fairly wide flan with a fine patina. Almost Superb. These coins featuring a horseman with the legend ‘BRI’ on the obverse belong to Group A of Y. Van der Wielen, considered the oldest, and are included in the New Atlas under series 869. This obverse inscription is associated with reverses bearing the inscriptions BRI, COMA, COM-A or COMAN. The authors date the end of these issues featuring the horseman to 43 BC, the year the Lyon mint was established.
