GAUL - CELTIC Arverni. Quarter-stater featuring a bige, derived from the Abydos ND mint (2nd century BC). Obverse: Apollonian profile wearing a laurel wreath, facing right, with a beaded chevron-like pattern on the neck. Rev. Chariot race to the right (with a single horse) driven by a charioteer holding the reins; between the horse’s ball-shaped legs, the remains of a monogram ‘AP’ evolving into a triskelion. DT.3012 = this specimen! - LT.- - Scheers/Lyon 305; Gold – 2.01 g – 11.5 mm – 9 h Acquired from Poinsignon in 1997. This is the specimen illustrated in the *Nouvel Atlas* no. 3012. Attributed to the Arverni or the central-eastern region. Of a fairly wide flan, with a centred strike. Slight flattening on the horse’s mane on the obverse. Beautiful golden patina. Very Fine / Very Fine to Superb.
