GAUL - CELTIC Aedui. Quarter-stater gold coin, Type III with lyre, Variant 5 with head to the right, ND (2nd–1st centuries BC). Obverse Obverse: Profile to the right, with curly hair ending in five curls arching over the head. Reverse: A chariot horse to the right (a single horse), surmounted by a charioteer stretched out and elongated above the horse, holding the reins. Beneath the horse: a two-stringed lyre. DT.3379a - LT.4838 - Castelin/Zürich 424; Gold - 1.93 g - 10.5 mm - 1 h From the collection of Raymond D. (1948–2017), acquired from C. N. B. in November 1992, then sold by CGB in 2018 (bga_472576). Only minor circulation marks and micro-marks on the fields. Well centred. With a fine golden patina. TTB to Superb. The attribution of this type seems to waver between the Arverni and the Aedui. Castelin classifies the specimen in the Zurich Museum as belonging to the ‘Medium Series of Philip II imitations’. This type is not included in D. Allen’s article on gold coins imitating Philip II in the 1974 issue of the Swiss Numismatic Review. A specimen of the same type as our quarter, though slightly less attractive, was sold for €1,800 at the ALDE auction on 14 June 2010, from the collection of a Burgundian amateur, lot no. 1
